What we want to write about however is a new (well few months old and on shelves near you already) Sony Bravia tv, finally a model with design and picture quality so good that instantly remind us of Qualia and passion behind that long forgotten line of products.

What we adore the most in the works of Noritaka Tatehana, is not one but two things (much more to tell the truth), first is a very clearly communicated wafuku feeling, and when we say wafuku we do not mean Japanese classical clothing we mean much more, an essence behind, a warm feeling and the taste of a bitter tea if you wish. Second is the perfect balance in colors and patterns, we haven’t seen such beautiful combination for quite some time. We strictly recommend checking flickr for some nice resolution photos.

Inspirations are timeless as well as the good design is. In this particular case we are looking at NTT DoCoMo Direct Menu UI design from 2008 – a collaboration with Masatsugu Nagasoe, mainly known as a Video director with some exiting music videos like this one. As you can see from the video clip above (may take some time to open) this collaboration brings a very graphically stunning design to the phones interface, at the end it all comes to the links list, which is not very exiting but we would still love to see graphics like those to appear more often on the phones of manufacturers like Nokia or Samsung.

Celsius X VI II has today unveiled another part of their teaser campaign regarding a yet to be shown cell phone, we are promised a very steampunk looking device, with a price tag quite usual for high level jewelry market and thus not so common for cell phones. We however have two secrets to tell you, first - a steampunk styled and engineered cell phone can be made and designed with the street price as low as a thousand euro, or even less, it is just that none has jumped on that train yet, second one is more exiting – the so called Nokia Erdos, canceled and almost forgotten 8800 line phone from 2009 is to be reincarnated in a new model this year, featuring S60 and few more similarities with Erdos we will let you know about soon.

Today we start a new column and while it is called designer of the week, it is more of a discovery of a week in a sense, and actually it is not going to be a weekly thing at all. Confused? We are confused too.

Any　way meet Mayumi Torio – a Tokyo based fashion designer, whose wool flared skirt from 2009-10 A/W collection completely carried us away. We first of all adore the minimalism and simplicity of almost architectural forms found in many of her works, and yet the skirt reminds us of a spaceship, now spaceship it may not be, but we love it. Who would wonder that this item is sold out.

We were waiting for a high resolution photo of this creation, that we couldn’t even describe in words. We finally got it. Exploring Frank Buchwald’s web site when preparing an article about Machine Light we noticed this object of incomparable clear lines and style. The console table is made in rawsteel, partially burnished. 5,8 foot long
and 2,83 foot high. The glasstop is 4,3 foot long (width 13 inch). Mr. Buchwald is also working on a new series of the Machine Light so we hope to be the first to tell you.

What Frank Buchwald creates is much more than a lighting design, he creates worlds. Each component is first made by hand after receiving an order making every Machine Light unique. His latest collection of lamps looks like forgotten dreams of a perfect stylistic balance, they have an incomparable atmosphere and most of all look like the objects that couldn’t be materialized in this reality. . . yet they are more than real being even available for purchase.

Frank Buchwald studied at the University of Arts, Berlin. Then he freelanced as a painter and Illustrator, switched to furniture design, making lots of inspiring objects that we unfortunately couldn’t show here (some information could be found at: www.x-15berlin.de ), and since 2002 he works on the lighting objects.

His works have a very salient character, so one couldn’t be mistaken, they all unique, all inspiring and all have that very atmosphere of a fairytale that becomes real right in a blink of your eye.

We visited MINT museum in november 2006, just few mouths after its opening. It is a must visit place in Singapore, the most interesting and inspiring one. MINT is a private collection of rare, old and unique toys presented in stylish and contemporary way; it has an atmosphere of attention to every little detail from decoration and furniture around to the very kind and helpful staff. Mint is not just a collection, it is a place to remember those yearly years you were playing with your toys and the world was that simple, MINT is like a time machine, a journey to the place you though you wouldn't have a chance to see again...

A perfect tea set solution is hard to find, after some time spent on searching we came up to the conclusion that the perfect one is a combination of many. However we do not give any recommendations on what tea you should drink, it is very personal and moreover very hard to stick with something particular. We also like coffee so next time we probably show objects of desire for coffee lovers.

We took Haros / TEBE mugs from Magppie as an ultimate cup. Available at www.kobaltshop.com (Korea), we also came across Magppie products in many design shops in Japan and Europe, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Next step was to find a tea infuser. We like to brew tea in a cup instead of a pot, yet sometimes there are two persons, so a set would be just great, and we managed to find it, our choice is Alessi Bauhaus, it goes for approximately 200 usd.

Yet there are others, for those who doesn’t quite like minimalism we found this one, shaped like a shell with lots of details it is, as we suppose, a collectors item, priced near 1000 usd. More information could be found at www.teainfusers.info

In the new Spring Summer 2007 accessories collection from Gucci we fell in love with three objects. One is whole series of writing tools; we especially adore those with minimalist look, Gucci have pens and pencils with different color variations based on one design concept. We quite like the new umbrella, should seem very nice in the rain.

And our last choice is an ice forms with the letter G. We don’t think that the ice looks good forming “G”, but we like the forms themselves.

We cover every sings thing worth watching. But we are very fastidious, so we don’t write about new phone from Vertu if we don’t like it, even if there are literally four manufactures on the market with the luxury models. At the same time it means that if we write about something we believe that this very object has a superior quality. Our tastes are highly individual, we write as we think without looking back or looking up to anyone. We believe that a true metrosexual is enlightened person interested in many spheres, a person with highest requirements for every thing he uses, person truly free of barriers, and limits of comprehension.

Switch Candle

This switch candle is the most inspiring idea we have seen so far. Designed by Korean designer Seungyoub Oh it remains a concept, but doesn’t seem too unrealistic. We probably wouldn't place it in every room but in special places it would look stunning.
The candle has two positions: off – when the main light is on, and lighted when the main light is off, but you can also blow it out like a real one, which sounds like hours of fun.

There are not so many films, movies or anime worth watching, but we have one for sure in 2007, no it is not Transformers... It is AFRO SAMURAI, dynamically groundbreaking video with amazing and very detailed animation style. There is a series released every week on spiketv.com, and a DVD coming later. Afro Samurai is not a deep philosophical epic like Innocence; it is closer to another stylistic bomb – Mezzo Forte, yet with less hentai part.

Today we remind you of some products and ideas that were terribly forgotten, or never get to actual production, or sometimes went far away from the original concept. Some of them however still have their chance to become real. Some are not forgotten, but there is one thing that unites them all - they are beyond usial products of consumption.

Abolished, rejected and unreleased.

Qualia.

Back in 2005 Sony announced that they closed their series of products under the name of Qualia, at the same time they erased the Aibo. Qualia was pretty uncommon idrea for a mass market company like Sony, they already had different grades of products from high-end to the middle but Qualia stand for ever better design, better quality, for innovation ideas and extraordinary solutions.

It even had a philosophy created by Ken Mogi, its story speaks of first in life experiences, the very moments of surprise and inspiration when you see, touch or drink for example, something haven’t experienced before. Products varied from digital cameras to cd players and tv sets. Qualia had a separated showroom in Tokyo and was very promising concept. A good rival for such companies as B&O, Loewe or Nakamichi.

Neonode.

Long before i-phone and smartphones that was compatible of making calls without giving a headache, there was an amazing concept called Neonode N1, it even went in production, even had an updates, though it was too late, it wasn't interesting at the date of release yet it inspired few year before it. The company even declared its bankruptcy yet called it back later.

Vodafone Japan.

Same as many Japanese companies like KDDI AU Japanese Vodafone had a special collection of mobile phones with a design value above others, yet it couldn't receive enough interest from Japanese consumers and after Vodafone Japan became the Softbank, there was no more "Vodafone Design Concept".

Concepts we may see in future or may not see.

Opus Operis by Jaren Goh.

There is no doubt that we probably will see Opus in few weeks from now but will be the one we were so exited about? There is a big chance that the answer is - NO. The original design was inspiring, had a strong atmosphere, it might have become the first truly luxurious and designers smartphone. Yet the manufacturer decided to make some changes, providing us with more comfort and usability, but less design.

This is how it looks now. Zenum says that it is not final and still may have changes in design, we hope it is true. But for now it seems like they just killed the perfect design making in just another smartphone.

Concepts from KDDI AU.

in 2006 Naoto Fukasawa presented the Infobar 2, few years ago Media Skin was just another concept like Infobar today, so we hope that this aesthetic piece of technology will see the light of a day.
They also have another new concepts, yet they don’t seem like making it into reality.

KDDI AU has released one of the most beautiful mobile phones ever. The Media Skin designed by Tokujin Yoshioka and presented to public two years ago is now available. So if you are not in NTT DoCoMo you should probably ignore your previous post and get one fast. We even think this one here is enough reason to drop you NTT DoCoMo contract and migrate to KDDI. They will also probably have a new Infobar 2 from Naoto Fukasawa available.

Among new 703 series of mobile phones from NTT DoCoMo there is one that captured our attention. N703imu from NEC reminds its younger brother for GSM networks – e949/L1, yet has much more aesthetic design, animated UI and very nice texture. Available only for Japan.

Sony has released a new wireless music solution for our homes, actually there are plenty of those, yet this one looks more than nice. It also is semi-portable. It integrates 128 MB of onboard RAM and up to four-hours of battery life so you can store about one CD’s worth of music on it and take the unit with you. In other words not a luxurious high-end, yet a high tech worth looking at. But in spite of this cute thingummy we do remember one thing we would never forgive SONY for…the QUALIA, one of the most inspiring lines of modern product with extraordinary approach, they killed it, bastards.

Showtime Collection for BD Ediciones de Diseño by Hayon Studio is a home furniture collection inspired on classical MGM musicals. We actually just love the design...
It has various colors but white looks just perfect, with combination of different materials like leather and plastic this collection is something fresh for sure. No words about availability however.

I don’t like the idea of a bluetooth headset in general, but for some such solution is a must, for them there are literally only two products available – they are: EarSet 2 from B&O and Jawbone pictured. Both stand for high comfort and sound quality. Jawbone also has some color variations like red, silver and of course - black.
